The Curriculum at St Joseph’s

Our curriculum has been designed to support the learning of all pupils, including those with special educational needs and / or disabilities.

We have limited what we want pupils to know to 5 pieces of key knowledge for each unit, to avoid our pupils becoming overloaded with facts and knowledge. These 5 pieces of key knowledge are the most important knowledge that we want our pupils to learn.

This knowledge has been carefully identified to build pupils’ knowledge and skills sequentially and cumulatively within each subject discipline.

Each piece of important knowledge is dual coded with an associated image to help pupils visualise the knowledge, making it easier to remember. This approach helps all pupils, particularly those with SEND as it de-clutters the curriculum.

In our curriculum, pupils receive the opportunity to frequently revisit and practise content to develop secure, deep and fluent knowledge.

Within our curriculum, we ensure that teachers have enough time to use the Teaching Framework (below) to ensure that they can address any gaps in pupils’ knowledge as quickly as possible.

All our subject policies have carefully considered what specific adaptations might help pupils learn.

There is a clear assessment procedure for each unit, in each subject to identify if pupils have learned the 5 pieces of key knowledge. Where this has not happened, groups of pupils will receive small group teaching to revisit and consolidate the knowledge they need to know.
